My sweet and humorous husband wrote this email to our daughter yesterday:
here is a new one for us… the following is an email I sent to one of my children this morning…(The rest of the Thill kids can relax, if you didn’t get the email, it wasn’t you!) The names were removed to protect the innocent!
Hey (Thill Child),
Hi sweetheart, I just wanted to give you some time to think about a very stupid choice you made so that when we get the chance to talk about it later you don’t start crying and telling me you don’t know why you did it or that you don’t understand why we never trust you and that we are so mean.
Imagine my surprise when I looked into my checking account this morning and saw a $37.50 charge from a website called Playster.com. I don’t know what that site is nor why they would be charging me, nor does mom. Imagine my surprise further when I call the company and find out that mom’s debit card was used on January 28th to set up an account in YOUR NAME using your email address! I wonder how that happened? Any ideas? Wait, I know….”So and So” did it, right? Or maybe it was the little kids who used mom’s card and set up the account in your name? Or maybe just plain, “I don’t know” struck again!!
As it is, you owe us $37.50 for the money you charged to our account AND whatever legal fees come as a result of you stealing money from us without our permission to use that money. That is called theft you know!
I want you to sweat this out for the rest of the day, get a really good story together about why you took mom’s debit card and gave that information to a site you know nothing about. Once you get that story bounce it off of a trusted adult with the ability to think abstractly so they can tell you where the holes in your story are at!! Once you come up with something that is believable and tested with an adult, throw it out and TELL THE TRUTH!
We are very disappointed in you my dear. Does this mean we don’t love you? No, but it does mean that we have a hard time trusting you.
Only you can fix your problem, we are here to help if you want that help.
Oh, and by the way, your Plaster account was cancelled (duh). Did you actually think we wouldn’t notice money removed from our account?? Hmm…
Mom and I look forward to talking to you when all we get home today, I hope your day is good and that pit in your stomach doesn’t cause too much anxiety over the next 8 hours.
